What Has My Life Come To?

But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, [23] and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, [24] and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

Hebrews‬ ‭12:22‭-‬24‬ ‭ESV‬

Today, this word guards my heart and reflects on the course of my life. Amidst distractions, I wonder what anchors me to God and His purposes. What promise strengthens my faith?

It’s what I have personally come to.

I have come to all the blessed things that God has promised his people, but most of all I have come to the Lord Jesus. And every time I wander or am tempted to wander from him, this word rises up in my soul, “but you have come.”

It reminds me of E.V. Hill’s message to us pastors gathered in Chicago when he challenged us with the words, “but you promised!” [1] I had contemplated quitting pastoral work due to its challenges, but the temptation was defeated as I heard the Spirit’s voice saying through Hill, “but you promised.”

Jesus said, “Follow me. Come with me.” And I promised,”I will.” [2] Jesus said, “Come to me, you who are troubled.” And I came. [3]

In these days as we witness a broken, fractured world reeling under the weight of evil, I’m tempted to complain about my own suffering or carry into the night the pain of loved ones worldwide. But then, the Spirit whispers, “but you have come…”

Once again, these words provide strength and peace, leading me to humbly kneel before our Gracious Master, saying,

“I’ve come to you, Jesus. Take my fears and help me trust in the glory of your Name. Take my wounds and hold me close in the healing of your love. Lord Jesus, guide me in sharing your heart with those seeking peace and meaning. Lift me up today in your life, granting me a clearer vision of the glorious Kingdom to which I’ve come.”
